This website provides general informational guidance and publicly available visa-processing information. It is not a law firm, immigration attorney, U.S. government website, U.S. Embassy website, USCIS website, NVC website, or Government of Pakistan website.
A general family-based immigrant visa path for Pakistani applicants interviewing in Islamabad. Exact steps can vary by category. Always follow current NVC and Embassy instructions.
Most family-based immigrant visa cases begin when a qualifying petitioner files a petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services. Family cases commonly use Form I-130.
The petitioner files with USCIS according to the form instructions, including fees and supporting evidence of the qualifying family relationship. Beneficiaries in Pakistan generally wait for USCIS action rather than filing the immigrant visa application at this stage.
Petition form, filing fee, and evidence required by the official USCIS form instructions. Exact evidence depends on the family relationship being claimed.
Filing the wrong form, omitting required relationship evidence, or assuming USCIS receipt of a petition means a visa interview has been scheduled. A petition is not a visa.
Pakistani civil documents used as petition evidence should match the relationship being claimed. The Department of State publishes Pakistan-specific civil-document guidance on its reciprocity page.
If USCIS approves the petition, it issues an approval notice and, for consular processing, transfers the approved petition toward Department of State processing.
Keep the USCIS approval notice. Watch for later NVC contact. Approval of a petition is not visa approval and does not assign an interview date.
USCIS approval notice and the approved petition record. Do not send original civil documents to NVC unless NVC specifically instructs you to mail something.
Treating petition approval as permission to travel, or making irreversible travel or financial plans.
After approval, most Pakistan immigrant visa interviews are later held at the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, which the Department of State identifies as the immigrant visa processing post in Pakistan.
After USCIS approves a petition for consular processing, it transfers the case to the Department of State’s National Visa Center for pre-processing.
Wait for NVC to create the case and send a Welcome Letter. Official NVC timeframe information is published on the NVC Timeframes page and can change.
The approved petition file transferred from USCIS. Applicants should not mail original documents to NVC unless expressly instructed.
Contacting NVC too early, or sending original documents that NVC did not request.
NVC is in the United States. Pakistani applicants complete NVC steps online through CEAC unless NVC gives different instructions.
After creating a case, NVC sends a Welcome Letter by email or physical mail. That letter includes the information needed to log in to the Consular Electronic Application Center (CEAC).
Use the Welcome Letter information to access CEAC, review messages, and follow NVC instructions. Keep login details private. This website never asks for NVC case numbers or invoice IDs.
Welcome Letter and CEAC access details issued by NVC.
Ignoring NVC emails, missing CEAC messages, or sharing case login details with unofficial websites.
NVC communicates electronically for most cases. Applicants in Pakistan should use an email account they can reliably access.
NVC requires applicable immigrant visa fees to be paid before it reviews a case for interview scheduling. Fee types and amounts are set by the U.S. government and can change.
Pay fees through the official CEAC/NVC process described in NVC instructions. Confirm current amounts on official Department of State fee pages. Do not pay anyone who claims they can buy an earlier interview.
Fee invoices and payment confirmation in CEAC.
Paying unofficial third parties, or assuming fee payment means the interview is scheduled.
Pay only through official U.S. government channels identified by NVC. This website does not list unofficial payment agents.
Immigrant visa applicants complete Form DS-260, the Online Immigrant Visa and Alien Registration Application, through CEAC.
Complete DS-260 accurately, submit it, and print or save the confirmation page. The Islamabad immigrant visa supplement lists the DS-260 confirmation page among items to bring to the medical exam.
Form DS-260 and the DS-260 confirmation page.
Leaving answers incomplete, using names or dates that do not match civil documents, or failing to keep the confirmation page.
Bring the DS-260 confirmation page to the medical examination in Pakistan if the Embassy supplement still lists it.
Applicants upload required civil documents to NVC through CEAC. The Department of State publishes country-specific guidance on which civil documents exist and which authorities issue them.
Collect the civil documents listed in CEAC for each applicant, scan them clearly, upload them, and keep originals for the interview. NVC instructs applicants not to mail documents unless NVC expressly asks.
For Pakistan, official reciprocity guidance discusses birth registration certificates, marriage registration certificates, divorce records, police character certificates, passports, and related civil records. FRC and CRC may be accepted as alternate birth evidence in some situations described on that page.
Uploading unreadable scans, omitting translations, or sending originals to NVC without instruction. Originals are generally needed at the interview.
Pakistan civil documents are issued by local Union Councils, Municipal Corporations, Cantonment Boards, the Capital Development Authority in Islamabad, NADRA, police authorities, and the passport directorate, depending on the document. See the Pakistan document guides on this site and the official reciprocity page.
Many family-based immigrant visa applicants must submit an Affidavit of Support and supporting financial evidence so NVC can review whether the sponsor meets public-charge related documentary requirements.
The petitioner/sponsor follows NVC Affidavit of Support instructions, commonly including Form I-864 or an accepted alternative, tax records, and proof of status and domicile. Upload the complete financial packet in CEAC.
Affidavit of Support forms, sponsor tax documentation such as W-2s when applicable, and proof of the sponsor’s legal status and domicile. The Islamabad pre-interview checklist also lists these items for family-based applications.
Submitting an incomplete I-864 packet, using outdated tax year materials when NVC requires current evidence, or forgetting that every required sponsor must file.
The financial sponsor is usually in the United States. Pakistani applicants still upload the packet in CEAC and bring required originals or copies to the Islamabad interview as instructed.
If NVC determines the applicant has paid the necessary fees and submitted the required immigrant visa application, Affidavit of Support, and supporting documents, NVC sends a message that the case is documentarily complete. Applicants and communities often call this Documentarily Qualified or DQ. NVC then works with the embassy to schedule an appointment. NVC cannot predict when the interview will be scheduled.
Read the CEAC/NVC message. Continue monitoring official messages. Do not assume an interview month. Compare any later public timeline observations on this site only as general information, never as a personal case status.
The complete NVC file already submitted. Additional embassy-specific originals are still required at interview.
Thinking DQ means a visa is approved, or that an interview date is guaranteed within a fixed number of days.
After DQ, interview scheduling for Pakistani immigrant visa applicants is coordinated with the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad. The official IV Scheduling Status Tool publishes the documentarily complete month NVC is scheduling for most interviews. That is not a personal interview date.
NVC schedules interviews based on appointment dates the embassy provides. Official guidance states NVC fills appointments in a first-in, first-out manner for documentarily complete cases, and that a preference-category applicant also needs a current priority date.
Wait for official appointment notification. Use the Visa Bulletin to understand whether a preference-category priority date is current. Do not rely on unofficial “predictors.”
No additional NVC mailing is required unless NVC or the embassy asks for something.
Paying agents who claim they can move a case forward, or treating social-media DQ charts as official government data.
Islamabad immigrant visa appointment volume is controlled by the embassy. Official public data is the DQ month being scheduled. Appointment notices are issued when those interviews are scheduled.
When an interview is scheduled, NVC sends the applicant, petitioner, and agent/attorney (if applicable) an email with the appointment date and time. In applicant communities this notice is often called an Interview Letter (IL). That community nickname is not a substitute for the official NVC appointment email and embassy instructions.
Read the official appointment notice and complete every pre-interview step on the Islamabad immigrant visa supplement, including online registration/document pick-up instructions, medical exam, and the pre-interview checklist.
NVC interview letter/appointment notice. The Embassy supplement says a copy of the NVC interview letter must be brought to the interview for applicable cases.
Missing the medical exam, failing to register for passport return as instructed, or arriving without originals listed on the checklist.
Follow the current U.S. Embassy Islamabad immigrant visa supplement. Interview location is the U.S. Embassy in the Diplomatic Enclave, with shuttle instructions published on that page.
All immigrant visa applicants, regardless of age, must have a medical examination before a visa can be issued. Only a physician approved by the U.S. Embassy can perform it. The Islamabad supplement instructs applicants to schedule the exam as soon as they receive an appointment date.
Schedule with a listed panel physician, attend the exam, and either carry the sealed results envelope unopened or confirm electronic transmission to the embassy, according to the physician’s process.
Interview letter, passport, required photographs, immunization records, relevant medical records, and DS-260 confirmation page, as listed on the official supplement.
Using a doctor who is not on the embassy-approved list, opening a sealed results envelope, or scheduling the exam so late that results are not ready.
The official Islamabad supplement lists approved physicians in Islamabad, Lahore, and Karachi. This site copies only that official list and will not add unverified clinics.
A consular officer reviews the formal application and interviews the applicant. The Embassy supplement states there is no guarantee that a visa will be issued.
Arrive via the published shuttle instructions, bring every required original document, complete security screening, and answer questions truthfully. Do not bring prohibited electronics.
Items on the official pre-interview checklist, including passport, photographs, civil documents with English translations and photocopies, medical results if given in an envelope, and family supporting documents as applicable.
Missing originals, bringing uninvited companions, selling property or buying non-refundable tickets before a visa is issued, or bringing cell phones into the embassy.
The U.S. Embassy is in the Diplomatic Enclave. Applicants must take a shuttle bus from the published Third Avenue / Quaid-e-Azam University Road location. Anyone whose name is not on the appointment letter is not allowed to enter, with limited exceptions for one interpreter or one assistant for special needs.
Sometimes a consular officer cannot decide immediately because additional documents are needed or the case requires more administrative processing. The Embassy supplement states administrative processing takes additional time after the interview and varies based on the circumstances of each case.
Follow the written instructions provided at the interview. If additional documents are requested, submit them exactly as the refusal/instruction letter directs. Do not mail documents to the embassy unless those instructions say to use the specified channel.
Whatever the consular officer requests. There is no single public list that applies to every administrative-processing case.
Assuming a fixed number of days, or sending documents to the wrong address.
The Islamabad supplement says that if documents must be sent after the interview, applicants should follow the consular officer’s instructions and not mail them directly to the embassy unless instructed.
If a visa is approved, the embassy prints the immigrant visa in the passport and may provide a sealed immigrant packet. Passport return is by courier according to embassy instructions. Visa issuance is never guaranteed.
Review the visa for spelling errors. Do not open a sealed immigrant packet. Pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee before travel if it applies. Enter the United States before the visa expires.
Passport with immigrant visa foil, any sealed packet, and medical X-rays if the embassy instructions require carrying them to the United States.
Opening the sealed packet, packing it in checked luggage, or traveling after the visa expiration date.
The Islamabad supplement states passports are returned by courier only and that applicants who must travel inside Pakistan while the passport is at the embassy should have another valid photo ID.
An immigrant visa holder must enter the United States before the visa expires, which the Embassy supplement states is usually six months from the date it is printed. USCIS then produces the Permanent Resident Card for eligible new immigrants.
Carry the visa, sealed packet if issued, and required medical X-rays. Pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee if required. Do not stay outside the United States for more than one year after the card is issued without reviewing official returning-resident rules.
Passport, immigrant visa, sealed packet if provided, and vaccination records especially for school-age children.
Entering after visa expiration, letting a derivative child age out before entry where CSPA does not protect them, or failing to pay the USCIS Immigrant Fee when required.
Travel from Pakistan to the United States should be planned only after visa issuance. Confirm any Pakistan exit health requirements, including documents that can change, with official Pakistani authorities before departure.
